The Dos and Don’ts of Car Storage

Thinking of storing your car long term? Use these tips to help keep it healthy while you’re away.

  • Check the moisture level in the trunk. As cars age, the rubber seal that’s intended to keep water out slowly wears away and allows more moisture in.
  • Spray a lubricant such as WD40 on exposed metals in the engine to prevent rust damage.
  • Before storing, make sure the car is completely clean both inside and outside, and check all susceptible areas for accumulated moisture.
  • Fill the gas tank and top off other fluids before storing. Otherwise, condensation will form and low gas will begin to thicken in the bottom of the tank.
  • Over-inflate the tires of your car to prevent flat spots.

  • Don’t leave your convertible top down. Doing so will encourage creases and weaken the fabric.
  • Don’t use water in the engine. Make sure you have topped off all of the proper anti-freeze or coolant needed before storing.
  • Don’t let your car sit without being driven. Make sure to visit your car and take it for a short drive every month or so. This will turn over parts and prevent them from rusting, as well as prevent flat spots on the tires and buildup of moisture in the engine.
  • Don’t store your care without replacing the oil. Replacing the oil in the engine before storing for a long period of time will prevent accumulated acids or moisture from attacking the system.
  • Don’t leave your car battery connected when storing. Disconnecting the battery after you drop your car off will help protect terminals and cables from corrosion.
