How to Shop For a New Car

Shopping for a car, whether new or used, can be an arduous task and can be overwhelming if the process isn’t done correctly. What is the best way to shop for a new car? Well, the obvious first step would be to decide which car on the market today interests you most or catches your eye the most. Also, price becomes a factor when purchasing a new car, especially with the economy the way it is now. The process of purchasing a new car is a lot like purchasing a used car but there are some things that are different regarding the process.

Purchasing a new car can be simple and quick if the buyer knows exactly what he or she is looking for and the price they are willing to pay. The ease and time of purchasing a new car also hinges on the prospective buyer’s ability to haggle with a salesperson. If the buyer does not know how to cut a good deal or know when he or she is being ripped off then the process could last hours, maybe even take a couple of trips to the dealership to complete.

Let’s say, for instance, a buyer wants to purchase the new Hyundai Genesis. Now, with all new cars, there are different editions of the vehicle, all of which come with various features for different prices. Before stepping foot onto a dealer’s lot, the prospective buyer should have a list of all the desired features in the car and the approximate price of that vehicle. Now, there are certain features that might not be available on any of the cars on the lot and the dealership will have to place a special order to the manufacturer to ship them the exact car the buyer wants. That will prolong the time it takes for the buyer to have the car in their own garage.

As a customer, you want to avoid this as much as possible. Having the car shipped to the dealership could result in extra costs and fees applied to the shipping that you shouldn’t have to pay for. Once the prospective customer puts together their list of desired features, such as a sunroof, Sirius-XM Satellite Radio, power steering, anti-lock brake system and more, the customer can then venture to the dealership.

Upon your arrival at the dealership, head right to the exact car you are looking for. Don’t start browsing around other makes and models. Make a b-line for the make and model you are looking for and begin reading the informational stickers on the window for each vehicle’s features. Let a salesperson know this is the vehicle you want to test drive, give it a whirl, and begin to negotiate the price. With a new car comes an excellent warranty. They usually go for three years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes around first. The warranty will cover any problems with the car that are not inflicted by the driver or other drivers. So, this means an accident is not covered under warranty. Safety recalls and problems with the engine and any other interior features, such as a broken radio, are covered under the warranty.
